A Green, Sustainable, Low Energy Building

In 2006, the project was awarded £30,497 from the Nidderdale AONB Sustainable Development Fund to help finance the installation of a ground source heat pump - GSHP, extra insulation and sunpipes. As a condition of the award the AONB required that the experience of installing and operating this type of technology in a community building should be shared with other organisations considering a similar installation. This was to include an interpretive board detailing every aspect of the installation and placed in an appropriate location. With 14 months experience of operating the systems, the board has now been designed and is located on the wall of CCCC at the point of access to the building from the car park

CCCC is pleased to acknowledge the following companies who have kindly sponsored the board:-

Hughes Geothermal who drilled the boreholes for the heat exchangers, Invisible Heating Systems who supplied the GSHP, and Michael Basnett, supplier and fitter of the sunpipes

Caring Together

A new group has been introduced by the Alzheimer's Society offering the opportunity for anyone who has or knows someone with memory problems to drop in for a chat and a coffee on Thursday mornings at CCCC. This is a partnership between the Society, Help the Aged and the CCCC Committee. The Society will have lots of useful information available, and advice can be provided about some of the existing services available locally.

Darley Local History Group

A new local history group has recently started meeting on alternate Thursdays at CCCC. Under the auspices of Age Concern, it provides an opportunity for older residents to meet and talk about their memories - and escapades! - of 50 or 60 years ago, and for some slightly younger ones to find out what life was like in Darley in the past. The immediate aim, using photographs and anecdotes, is to provide a scrapbook which will provide a snapshot of personal memories of life in Darley.

Ground-source heat

The building will be heated by a renewable energy system using ground-source heat accessed from boreholes, and supplying a Velta underfloor heating system - see blog entry for 23rd March. Underfloor heating is the most efficient type of space heating to use with a ground-source heat pump (GSHP)

A GSHP system consists of a ground heat exchanger, a water-to-water heat pump, and a heat distribution system. A typical system is shown above

The ground heat exchangers are U-tubes

inserted into

pre-drilled bore holes

No oil, but plenty of water !!
